Free Viagra in Mexico City
Men aged 70 and older will be the recipients of free Viagra and other impotence drugs from December 1 in a bid to make citizens happier.
Mayor Marcelo Ebrard explained the move by saying sexuality “Has a lot to do with quality of life and our happiness.”
In 2004 British university researcher Andrew Oswald and Dartmouth College economist David Blanchflower published research they conducted on 16,000 people titled “Money, Sex and Happiness: An Empirical Study”.
The report said sex “enters so strongly (and) positively in happiness equations” that the difference in happiness between sex once a week compared to once a month is roughly as gratifying as earning an extra $50,000 per year for the average American.
WebMD says the “’econometric’ calculations confirm what psychologists have long known: People who consider themselves happy are usually richer in sexual activity.”
City Health Secretary Armando Ahued says the impotence drugs will be distributed through three centres that specialise in sexual health for the elderly. The men will undergo medical examinations before receiving the pills.
Mr Ahued estimates there are 112,000 men 70 or older living in the Federal District, which has a population of 8.7 million, while around 20 million people live in the greater Mexico City area.
Incoming health minister Tony Ryall was not able to return comment before publication on whether or not New Zealand would investigate replicating the move.
